Chantalle & Danny June 12th, 2010

post written on 29 Jun 10 in Portraits, Weddings

There is one little fact that will be noticeable in the pictures, Chantalle is a poser, not that there is anything wrong with that. Chantalle loves it, Danny her husband loves it, and me the photographer loved it. Chantalle knows at all times where the camera is, thanks for making my life easy. I love when my bride knows how to work it, and Chantalle definitely can! Her dress, Vera Wang “Rita”, is from my friend Camille Russler of Ever After Miami, and the Christian Louboutin shoes too. Thanks to Ivette Perez of the Epic Hotel for the use of the penthouse to get such fabulous photos. Wedding planner was Jackie Ohh of Jackie Ohh Events.

Ever After Photoshoot- The Images

post written on 25 Jun 10 in Fashion, Videos, Weddings, personal

A lot of you have asked about the images we shot for Camille Russler at Ever After Miami last year, we had posted the video, but not the photographs, as those were being held for the official website launch for the store Ever After Miami. So here are some of our favorite images from the shoot. Hope you like them as much as we do. Also, I included the video from the shoot again, I love how it came out. Thanks to my friend Julien at Merge Studios.

Brielle & Mathew June 5th, 2010

post written on 21 Jun 10 in Weddings

Matt and Brielle are one of the coolest couples you will ever meet, so it didn’t matter that the heat index in Miami on their wedding day was between 110-115 degrees. Yes, it helped that the whole wedding was inside the fabulous W Hotel on South Beach. From beginning to end their wedding ROCKED! Brielle’s dress was from my great friend Camille Russler at Ever After Miami. All decor was from Petal Productions. Thank you to Andi and staff from Anje Soirees keeping the event running smoothly. And as always to all in my team for a wonderful job; Robert, Ryan and David.

Carlos, we already knew how talented you were when we hired you to shoot our wedding, but it wasn’t until we took our engagment pictures that we really understood why. Matt cringed at the thought of having an “engagement shoot,” but it only took meeting you and 10 snaps of the camera to change his attitude. We had the best time and the results were amazing. Your charm and abilty to let people be themselves in front of an audience is just one of your many talents, not to mention your artistic vision and ability to capture the perfect lighting, space, and moment. We are blown away by our wedding pictures and are so grateful we will always have them to remember how special and perfect the night was. Thank you so much for everything! Brielle and Matt

Anya & Deepak May 30, 2010

post written on 17 Jun 10 in Weddings

Anya and Deepak are both plastic surgeons in Connecticut. Anya told me she fell in love with Deepak while they were both performing surgery because he kept making her laugh; you have to love that one. They both have that classic style, but Anya throws in that NY fashion flair to spice things up. I shot their engagement pictures on and around the Brooklyn Bridge back on November 1st. It was chilly, but I don’t think any of us noticed having so much fun. Their ceremonies (Hindu and Jewish) and reception were held at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. Let’s just say, it was a little warmer then it was in NY back in November.

I’ve worked with Crystal a few times and each time we have more fun. This was a shoot we did late last year. I only shot 2 1/2 minutes of video on the Canon 5D Mark II, and my friend Curt Apanovich edited together the fusion video, below the images. The video was my opener at the New Orleans Partner Con Conference this past November. Enjoy!

Nicole & Chris 04-08-10

post written on 07 May 10 in Weddings

I love small weddings on a Thursday. I also love when a couple like Nicole and Chris, who reside in New York, are so in love. They have been together for 11 years, and have a beautiful 5 year old daughter, Charli. It was a small wedding by comparison, 65 guests, at Viscaya Museum and Gardens, but it had enough energy like it was a wedding of several hundred. Chris owns nightclubs in the city, so he had one of his incredible DJ’s, Eli Escobar, rock the night. They couldn’t have asked for a better night under the stars. The event was planned, designed and catered by A Joy Wallace.  Cinematography by Guillermo and his team at Free Mind Studios.

Melissa & David 03-27-10

post written on 03 May 10 in Weddings

Melissa and David are both film makers. So you can imagine, it could have been full hands on, or hands off. Luckily they are the types that trust those around them, and let us do what we do best, shoot. You can tell David is the goofy one, and Melissa alluring. The engagement shoot we shot all available light, mostly at night in downtown Orlando. It’s the first time I had all of their friends come along for the engagement shoot, from bar to bar, it was a blast.

The wedding was part old school Cuban, mixed with progressive art school vibe. Of course there were great Cuban cigars, considering Melissa’s family are the owners of Padron Cigars. The ceremony was held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Miami, the same church Alison and I got married in, and we attend. The reception was held at Viscaya Museum & Gardens. The whole event was planned by Cristina Llorente of Cymbidium Events. Again I was fortunate to work with Julien from Merge Studios who filmed the engagement and wedding. Thanks again to my team Catalina for her great images, and to Caroline for her assistance.

post written on 30 Apr 10 in Fashion, Nudeoir, personal

Summer is a model I love to work with, she gets it. Not only that, she’s a genius, getting her biology degree from the University of Miami. She also tutors other students on campus. This is just one of many projects that Summer and I have collaborated on. Oh, and by the way, right when I took that last shot on the “bottom”, two guys broke into my truck, smashing the window, stealing her purse, and slashing my tire. Hey, “but” I got the shot.

Oleksandra – From Russia with Love

post written on 29 Apr 10 in Fashion, Lingerie, Nudeoir, Portraits, personal

I’ve been asked by many a client and photographer to show more of my “personal work”. So this is one of many new posts coming that will share with you, my readers, images and insight of my work other then weddings. This shoot in particular was of Oleksandra while I was up in Chicago. It’s funny what you can accomplish in less than an hour. Oleksandra is the epitome of confidence and sensuality that most of strive for, or at least want to once in a while. The trust she had in me allowed us to bring out in her what she’s always wanted, freedom. Enjoy her freedom.

Claudia and Alejandro 03-13-10

post written on 14 Apr 10 in Weddings

Claudia is the youngest of 3, so this is the 3rd Rodriguez Family wedding I have had the privilege to photograph in the last 3 years. There was Reggie & Ellie, Liana & Carlos, and now Claudia & Alejandro. The Rodriguez family love to have parties, so when it’s their kids weddings, a party it is. The father, Ray Rodriguez, recently retired as the President & CEO of Univision Communications Inc., the nation’s leading Spanish-language media company. It also helps that Liana de Mena, Claudia’s sister, is an event planner and has her own company, The Agency. So you can imagine, Claudia and Alejandro were in good hands. Claudia wore a stunning dress that was designed by both Mark Ingram and Monique Lhuillier. For their wedding, both ceremony and reception were held at the family home, which made it intimate, even though there were 500 guests. For an outdoor Jewish wedding in Florida, the weather was perfect. The band Kukaramakara kept the party going all night with DJ Rascal, and for Alejandro’s family who flew in from Chile, all night means just that. The production was no small feat either, and that was handled by Pete Diaz Productions. Flowers were by Always Flowers. Linens were by Nuage Designs. Hair by Daisy for OM Beauty. Make up by Lutz.  Video by Utopia. I want to thank my great team that night, my friend David Wittig who flew down from Chicago, Robert, Tracy,  and my wife Alison.

But most importantly, I want to thank the Rodriguez family for having us photograph all 3 weddings. I am honored and touched that they make us feel like part of the family. I could not be more blessed. Thank you Claudia and Alejandro for letting us be part of your lives too, here’s to you, your siblings, and Don Julio! Congratulations!

Corey and John 3-6-10

post written on 07 Apr 10 in Weddings

Corey and John are a blast to be around. If you know them, their energy is so positive, they can turn anyone’s day around. From our initial meeting, we hit it off like old friends, not skipping a beat. It’s like their love, when it’s right, it’s right. To be part of their day was like being at a big party, from beginning to end. There were formalities of course, but it was a party just like Corey and John wanted, a celebration. Corey’s wedding dresses were both from Camille Russler at Ever After Miami; the first dress was Anna Maier / Ulla Maija Couture, the second dress was Vera Wang. The event was held at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle. Thanks go out to all that collaborated: Planner Weddings by Lori Kelly , Florist Always Flowers, Band Marcia Mitchell Music, Video Utopia Video Productions , and or course my fabulous team of Catalina and her great images, and Caroline and Karen for their great assistance.

The large photograph in the background above, is by ©David Leslie Anthony. A great photographer who has worked himself up from the bottom, to now worldwide acclaim. Thank you David for continuing to produce beautiful work and inspiring others. His images are available for purchase through Avant Gallery.

When we began planning our wedding, we made a promise to not only work with people whose work INSPIRES us – BUT people who we actually like! – who we enjoy being around, who are the real deal and who *get us.* Finding the right photographer took time… But then you walked in the door Carlos… and you had us at HELLO. (ALL of us!!!) Your photos knock our socks off… and we just love being around you. Thank you Carlos and Catalina, and Caroline and Karen – you did it!
    *YOU CAPTURED OUR MOMENTS.*

Our ONLY regret after our wedding is the one that’s unavoidable… it’s cliche, but it goes by so darn fast! So we thank our lucky stars that we had the impeccable and marvelous you behind the lens gathering the details that defined our wedding.

PS – Just one major dilemma… we just received all of our photos and there are way TOO many fabulous pictures… how on earth are we going to choose???

My papi, Ramon Baez

post written on 01 Apr 10 in Family, personal

5 years ago today, April 1st, my papi passed away. He was not sick; he was 74. He mowed the yard that morning, took a nap, awoke saying he didn’t feel well, and then had a heart attack.
My mother was at their home, called a neighbor, who in turn called me. I raced over to their home from mine, 10 minutes at most, to already find paramedics, who had known my father personally, working on him on the floor.

I turned my attention to comforting my mother and thinking of all the things I needed to do to help. Everything was racing through my head, but everything lining up in perfect order of what needed to be done. It’s weird how you focus in crisis.

They did their best, kept him breathing, and took him to the hospital into intensive care.
He was put on all sorts of machines; I guess it is procedure, hoping for the best, or a miracle.

We were let in to see him; my mother and I went in. When you first see your father or loved one attached to countless machines, it’s not a site you want to remember, but I remember it clearly. It drives me everyday.

Of course we cried, but I tried to stay strong for my mother, and I knew my father would want that. My brother and sister were out of state, so them getting there anytime soon was not a possibility. But the Cuban phone chain went into action and one after the other, my cousins, aunts, uncles, friends started showing up to the waiting room.

My papi always taught me about honesty, truth. We were never ones for lies, don’t like liars, they do no serve anything well. So when I kept asking nurses or anyone for answers, they gave me textbook answers, lets wait and see. Of course we prayed for a miracle, but we are also very realistic family, no matter what faith.

Then came our family doctor, who is a straight shooter. I looked at him, he looked at me, and just told me, there is no chance for your father to survive. He was without oxygen for too long. He told me the machines were standard procedure for the next 48 or 72 hours. To me, once I heard his honest answer, I knew anything else was pointless.

It was his time to go. No matter what amount of consoling I got from family and friends, it made no difference, I knew he was gone.

Finally came the time to stop the machines, he kept breathing on his own for some time, but it was just the body, the machine, that was just still ticking, until he stopped.

Of course I was upset, so were the hundreds if not thousands who showed up to his funeral, all saying to me, your father was a great man. The most kind and HONEST man they had ever met.

Knowing this is what keeps me going.

My father never got to see my boys. Alison and I had told him the day before he died that we were pregnant with our first child through in vitro fertilization.
When Alison walked, my dad and I were standing on the porch of his home; I told him they had implanted 3 embryos, that we could possibly be having triplets if all took.
The last thing I ever heard my father say to me was, “Now you are going to know what it’s like to be a father.”

When the casket was going into the ground, I felt a nice breeze come across my arm. I felt at peace, I knew I had to step up to provide a good home for my new family, like my father did, coming to this country from Cuba with nothing except my mom and sister and brother, who were 3 and 5, and had to start all over again with nothing, but his 6th grade education and his skill as a mechanic, and did his best to support his family.

You see, he had to prove himself all over again. At a car dealership, he was given a challenge by the owner, to fix a diesel truck that none of the other guys could get started in the past year. Get it started and he would have a job. 2 days he worked on it alone, him and his tools. Then came a huge roar of the engine, white smoke filling the mechanics bay. When the owner came to see the commotion, my dad walked out of the smoke covered in grease, handed the owner a wrench, and got the job, all with his year’s of experience and his tools of his craft.

So today, in now our second home together, Alison and I have 2 beautiful boys, Carson Ramon and Cameron Alexander who are almost 4 ½ and 3. So every time I hear their voices running around the house, I wish my dad could be here to hear whatever sound they are making.

I know I am making him proud through my hard work and doing my best to be a good father and husband, but more importantly, that I am a man who is respected, honest, and truthful.

Papi, I miss you, but I know you can hear our boys.

My papi was Ramon Baez.

Lovely post. I have found the best way we can honor our loved ones who have passed on is to live the life they wanted us to live, and you are doing just that and then some. My mother passed 11/11/08 under similar circumstances and we too removed life support. Not memories you like to remember, and not as important as the lives and values they lived. Well done.

Carlos, That is a incredible story, thank you for sharing such a personal part of your life. I had a very similar experience 10 years ago with my wife’s Mother, she was the greatest mother-in-law anyone could ever ask for. I know oh too well about those breathing machines I too had to turn one off and watch her go. Your father and mother raised a son they can be very proud of.

Carlos, thank you so much for sharing. Your dad sounded like a wonderful, honest, hard working man. I have no doubt he was and I’m not surprised from seeing how you are. I know he was & is extremely proud of you. I was really moved by your story and now I view April 1st differently. Best wishes to you & your family

Carlos, what a wonderful blog post about your father. I’m soooo sorry he can’t be there to see your kids but I’m so glad you were able to enjoy him while he was still here. I recently lost my grandma the exact same way. She will never meet my kinds, her grand kids, and it’s painful to know. This post is an inspiration and I’m glad you shared it.

Carlos, what a touching tribute to your father. It must be tough for your family not to have your \Papi\ around physically, but it sounds like his lessons and spirit have never left. I’m sure he is smiling and proud of the family you and Alison have built.

Drop_of_water

Wow. We did it!

Together we broke a record. Last week, we raised a record-breaking $41,635.88. This will help ThirstRelief save 8,327 lives by providing access to safe, clean drinking water.

You Deserve the Credit.

Whether you volunteered to be a mentor, bid on a mentor, tweeted, Facebooked, blogged, or simply told a friend about the auction, this would not have been possible without YOU. Thank you.

We’re humbled and honored by you.

Warmly,

Lisel & James 1-17-10

post written on 03 Feb 10 in Portraits, Weddings

I thought I would let our bride Lisel & James have the honors to write in their own words.
Our wedding weekend was much more of a big good-bye party than anything else. And that’s just what we wanted. Neither of us are much good at staying in the same place for very long. Inevitably, we’re off again. This time we’ve applied to the Peace Corps and hope to be stationed in West Africa for 2-plus years. Our ‘honeymoon’ will be traveling for as long and as far as we can before the Peace Corps. We’ll start in Spain with the Camino de Santiago, a centuries-old pilgrimage that takes us walking across Spain, this will be for 5 weeks, and then head over to India, Nepal, Bhutan, Japan and New Zealand. With that said, these past few months were our last stable moments States-side. We have a beautiful array of family and friends all over the world and it was important for us to get everyone together for a formal au revoir. It may be years before we see most of them again.
Photography was key and shooting with Carlos was one of the highlights of the weekend. His creativity and energy brought out the best in the group and we’re looking forward to many moments captured of everyone we love in their element. Catalina also did an amazing job capturing James and the event as well. After the party’s over, all we’ve got are the memories and the photos.
Bon Voyage,
Lisel & James

The Baez Boys Latest Adventures

post written on 03 Feb 10 in Family

As always, love to keep friends and family posted on the latest adventures of our boys Carson and Cameron. With Carson being in preschool, he now has lots of activities. The highlight recently was “snow day” in Miami. Yes, it does snow here, but only if an ice company supplies the snow. The boys also experienced their first bowling outing which they enjoyed, and not one finger was hurt. That same day we went down to the Mexican outdoor market in Homestead. The colors, aroma, and the people were exciting, but it was the miniature horses that kept the boys busy and bouncing, especially Carson’s hair, in the video below. Lastly, Carson had a bikeathon at his school which Cameron also participated in, to help raise funds for St. Jude. Cameron pretty much will do anything his brother does, but on a smaller scale. The great thing about my career is the time it allows me to spend with my family, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Then and Now – How cycling moves me, and got me into photography

post written on 02 Feb 10 in personal

If you’ve known me for a long time, or follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you know cycling has been one of the things in my life that keeps me focused and balanced. I started racing when I turned 15 at the end of 1979. I was already a multi-sport athlete, so the fitness was there. In my first race I was 3rd, in my second I was 2nd, and in my third I was 1st, sounds funny I know. I moved up categories and started racing with older cyclists here in Miami, there weren’t a lot of cyclists my age around back then. In 1981 I won my first Florida State Sprint Championship on the track. I actually won 3 in a row (1981, 82 & 83). I was even invited to the Olympic Training center to try out for the US Junior World Cycling Team for Track. There were only 2 spots, I didn’t make the team, but I learned early about “politics” and how things work. The guy that made the team; turns out his personal coach was the one making the decisions. Oh well. In 1983 I raced at the National Championships in Los Angeles, it was my first year as a senior division cyclist (18 to 35). Like tennis, it’s about the draw or seeding you get. I unfortunately had to race against the National Champion and eventual 1984 Olympic Champion, Mark Gorski. It was like David vs. Goliath, but this time Goliath won. I was a boy racing against a seasoned professional. Although I had world class coaching, I was lacking the years and maturity it took to be World Class. I was also lacking the steroids(supposed) that the top athletes took too, but that was not even in my nature, I wasn’t a drug taking cyclist, never have, never will. After coming back from LA, I started my first semester of college. I was down and dejected from what happened in LA, but I was still racing, doing very well locally, but it didn’t mean as much.

A week after the photo above, left (BTW, that is one of my best friends Bret Sandoval next to me in the pic), I separated my shoulder in a crash during a race when a cyclist in front of me went down. Bret had to take me to the hospital. That crash changed my life and steered me in other directions other than cycling and my Computer Science in Engineering classes. Photography had always been an interest so I took a photography course while at FIU. One day my cycling coach, Claudio Costa, saw a box of Kodak Paper in my bag, and I showed him some prints I had made in my darkroom class. He said something to me that day in 1984 that again, changed my life. He said,”Carlos, you are a good cyclist, but you will be a great photographer one day.” I thought he was crazy, but eventually I went to the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, where I studied photography full time for 2 years and got my degree.  Flash forward 26 years and I’m still shooting. I’ve been all over the world and back with photography, done and seen some really cool things. So when my 45th birthday was approaching back in October, I started feeling those “mid-life” thoughts creep in. Instead of buying a new sports car, I bought a new racing bike, a Parlee Z5, 15.2 lbs of power and stability. Yes, I dabbled in cycling here and there throughout the years, but with traveling and my career, it took a backseat. But now, I have rekindled a lot of cycling friendships through long training rides, almost daily, of 50 miles, and my love for cycling is blooming again. I love the honesty true cyclists have, they are good people. The time on the bike has given me a lot of time to think of my family, career, ideas and what the future holds, plus the fitness to maybe even race again, for fun of course. It has given me lots of analogies between cycling and photography that I will be sharing with many of you soon. One in particular, that it takes many miles and hard work to make it to the top, and constant training to stay there. Building a strong base is very important in cycling, but also in your photography career. So if you are ever in Miami, have your bike and camera, look me up. We will have to put in some hard work, on and off the bike.

I LOVE the parallels you have made with cycling and photography:) I to was a multi sport athlete in highschool and College is where I started to dwindle from cycling. I have always worked in bike shops and loved the camaraderie of cyclists. I also love the simple mechanics of a bicycle. My highschool term paper was on the history of the bicycle. The problem I have had in business and in cycling is staying focused, i haven’t been a “cyclist” for years and my Cannondale six-13 is sadly hanging in the garage:( 2010 is our year to bring back the focus, unfortunatly we have to wait until the snow leaves to bring out the bikes. Thank you for this story:)

Melissa & Cesar 1-09-10

post written on 29 Jan 10 in Weddings

You might remember Melissa and Cesar from their sexy engagement shoot we did last year. Flash forward to their wedding and not much has changed other then they happened to get married on one of the COLDEST days in Miami ever. There were reports of snow flurries that day, it was crazy! Melissa had a beautiful Monique Lhuillier gown which she got in New York at Kleinfeld’s. Again I was fortunate to work with Julien from Merge Studios who filmed the amazing day, we always do our best work together. The wedding was at St. Patrick’s Church on Miami Beach.  To get to the reception, the whole bridal party and I braved the elements, 39 degrees, and rode on a trolley from Miami Beach to the reception at the Alfred I Dupont building in downtown Miami. I love this location. I’m partial to it since I shot the owner of the Dupont’s wedding there, and many other event’s. The flowers were done by EC Floral and the catering by Barton G.
